A Quick Look at Christmas and Heading to Oregon

We’ve been so busy that though I’ve created lots of wintry recipes and taken lots of photos, I just haven’t had time to put a post together.  Especially with all the prep for our local ingredient Christmas party.  On Christmas day Eric and I went snowshoeing in the first snow of the season as our present to each other.  It was an epic day and I’ll have a video for you later which includes our car precariously sliding towards a cliff as we slid for a mile down the mountain without any traction!

Spinach, Asian Pear, Cranberry, Hazelnut Salad and Foodportunity

Cranberry Asian Pear Salad Overhead Blog Size

Right now, I’m heading to San Francisco for the Foodbuzz Food Blogger Festival.  But I made sure to schedule a post for you so you won’t miss me too much! I got a free cookbook in the mail the other day, it’s called “The New Thanksgiving Table”, by Diane Morgan (yes, free cookbooks are a great perk of being a food blogger!).  As I flipped through the pages, I was impressed with the array of salads, sides, appetizers, turkey ideas and desserts.  In the salad section, I saw one that I had almost all the ingredients for!  I used Asian pears rather than Bosc, and shallots instead of red onion.  I also changed the serving to be for just two of us, though made the full amount of dressing for future uses.  We loved the salad, except the dressing was a little too salty, so that’s adjusted in my recipe below.  I liked two techniques Diane uses that I hadn’t done before.  One was soaking the red onion (or shallots) in cold water for 30 minutes to crisp them and take away the raw onion taste.  The other was to soak the dried cranberries in the dressing to soften them.    The recipe is at the end of the post, but first I wanted to share the latest Foodportunity with you!

Foodbuzz 24, 24, 24: Sustainable Omakase Sushi at Mashiko in Seattle

Mashiko store front in West Seattle.

It’s another exciting month of events at Dianasaur Dishes.  I’m still putting together video from our Artisan Steak Tasting, Tuesday I get to dine at Springhill in Seattle at a special Foodbuzz table, and I almost have all the photos edited of our fun filled farm tour with our friends’ toddlers.  But today, I get to share with you the latest event sponsored by Foodbuzz (and brought us by VISA Signature).  That’s right, I got another 24, 24, 24 proposal accepted, and so Eric and I got to experience omakase at Mashiko, the very first sustainable seafood sushi restaurant in Seattle.  I spent 9 whole hours editing the video below, last night was a late night!  It’s an overview of omakase, Mashiko, and sustainable sushi.  Then you can read on for more information and drool over the photos of the best meal I’ve ever had!
